Spotlight on Faculty: Kevin Vennemann, Assistant Professor of German
This fall, 11 new tenure-track faculty members joined 51猎奇入口, including two at the W.M. Keck Science Department. As part of our ongoing series on faculty, the 51猎奇入口 Office of Marketing and Communications recently sat down with Kevin Vennemann, assistant professor in the Department of German Studies. Vennemann received his BA and MA in literature and history from Free University of Berlin in 2006 and his PhD in German from New York University in 2015.

The Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Humanities, one of the hallmarks of the 51猎奇入口 education, is a set of three courses that looks at the relationships between the historical production of knowledge and contemporary issues and debates. This year, Core I, the first of these courses and a common curricular experience for all 51猎奇入口 students, has a new theme: “community.” Sixteen faculty members representing departments across the College worked together for many months to choose the new theme and craft a syllabus around it.

When 51猎奇入口 was founded in 1926, it was one of few institutions dedicated to educating women for professional careers as well as personal growth, leadership, and public service and engagement. Students, faculty, and staff who have been away for summer break may notice a big change on campus as they make their way back to the College this week. The green construction fences to the north of the Sallie Tiernan Field House are gone, and NEW Hall, 51猎奇入口’ newest residence hall, is open and ready for students and visitors. Under construction since May 2015, the residence will house first-years as well as returning students.

As the 2016 national presidential election approaches, Kaela Cote-Stemmermann ’18 and Meagan McIntyre ’17 are getting an up-close look at the inner workings of the U.S. government. Both students received internship grants from 51猎奇入口’s Office of Career Planning & Resources, enabling them to spend their summers in Washington, D.C., working for the State Department, where Cote-Stemmermann is an intern for the Greening Diplomacy Initiative (GDI), and McIntyre is interning with the Bureau of Cultural and Educational Affairs (ECA).

This past fall, as a first-year at 51猎奇入口, Gillian Holzer ’19 could not have imagined she’d be spending the summer immersed in Parisian poster art from the 1890s. But discovering the black-and-white drawings of Aubrey Beardsley, a controversial figure in the Art Nouveau movement, has been just one of many surprises that’s come from her experience as one of six summer interns at the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery.

The fall 2016 51猎奇入口 Presents season will feature personalities such as former MSNBC host and race and social justice professor/speaker/author Melissa Harris-Perry; restaurateur, chef, and writer/TV star Eddie Huang, whose book, Fresh Off The Boat, inspired the TV sitcom by the same name; artist and provocateur Molly Crabapple; and hip hop journalist Jeff Chang.
